The ones that receive any benefits are few and far between, its a hassle to get a lot of benefits if you were born here, let alone someone without a social security number. Most are hard working and keep to their self, definitely not stealing any jobs around here, hell sending them out of here would hurt us more than ever helping us really. People should be lucky they were born here, instead of sitting back and telling someone else to come in the 'right way', when they didn't do a thing to earn being here either...just lucky genetics.
From what I understand, you are a young guy and you speak with quite a bit of certainty about the immigration issue. My question is, what experience with illegal or legal immigrants do you have to make your statements? I've not lived in Scott County in 20 years but is there a population of Hispanics in the area? I think that if some of us lived in the states on the Mexican border our opinions may be different.

Drive around some of our local construction sites and take a poll of the workers.
Yes a good number are born in the USA, but a significant number are not (Holiday Inn, CVS, et. al.)
They were the ones working in the blazing heat and the bad weather.
I know of locals that refused to even apply with the construction companies - the work is too hard.
    You'll shoot your eye out.

Just wondering. I don't remember many Hispanics growing up and wondered if things had changed in far SWVA. I do know that there is a lot of Hispanics in the Galax and Grayson County area and it has been mentioned in the news at times about gang activity specific to Hispanics.

Even North Carolina has a very heavy hispanic population, and growing.

Yea, Grayson borders North Carolina and there are quite a few Christmas tree farms in that area.

Well several family members have dated a few, one illegal and one legal, that was from when I was 6 to about 17. Of course I knew them and grew up around those and their friends(some illegal some legal). They lived(still do I guess) over in copper creek mostly, but quite a few in fincastle and around lebanon. Hell when I was little I'd lay sticks sometimes on the tobacco fields when they worked and get like 5 bucks and abunch of candy. A few moved over to tenn., a lot though still live around here in the same places. Just go to FC in St. Paul around 5 when shifts end at the plant, you'll see quite a few hispanics. From my experience around them, they were very nice and very hardworking( working in a field in the hot sun all day is hard work). Of course that's just the 10-15 I've known personally since I was little.

I dont have a bit of a problem with them here as a race. I do appreciate the ones that work their way properly through the system though. I did have 6 hispanics who worked on the house I built. 2 were carpenters (one originally from Mexico and the other was born in Chicago). George was from Mexico and is working here long enough to get his daughter through school and then returning to Mexico, where he will probably be setup pretty well. 2 more were part of the crew that installed countertops. Very nice guys, but dang, little cell service around the house and a thick accent made it difficult when they got lost trying to find my place. Luckily being familiar with what navigation units/mapquest tends to know of this area I found them on a backroad I assumed they would be on. And the last 2 were my roofers. Great guys and I would highly recommend them if anyone is needing shingles put on. They done great work that I don't envy. I didn't ask them their immigration statuses, but in talking to them I think they were probably here legitly. All 6 were super nice guys who I would have over at any time.

Some people on this board turn the illegal issue into a race issue. It's not about race at all. It's about sneaking across that border, and not going through the process the correct way. Mexicans, canadians, europeans, whatever they may be.

I am not trying to turn it into a race issue I was just replying to a comment made that they (Mexicans) are seen as scum by a lot of people. I am simply saying that every race has scum and every race has good people. There is no race issue there.
